Overview

Two women astronauts are aboard a failing spacecraft, trying to save Earth, and running out of time. ALONE is a sci-fi thriller from New Zealand company Alchemy Theatre that puts survival, climate collapse and the silencing of women in STEM into the same pressurised room. It arrives heavily decorated — Best Drama at WHAT THE FRINGE?!, a 2025 Fringe Theatre Award, Best Theatre at Auckland Fringe, and both the Pannz and SYNZ Tour Ready Awards — with a run of five-star reviews behind it.

What we love about it:

Genre. Theatre about the climate defaults almost automatically to naturalism and grief — someone in a kitchen, being sad about the future — and audiences have learned what to feel before the lights go down. A thriller does the work differently: the persuading is done by tension, and you are too busy wanting the characters to survive to notice you are being argued with. Putting two women scientists at the centre, and making the failure to listen to them part of the plot rather than a footnote, is the other thing it gets right.

Adults and teenagers. If you have someone in your life who says they don’t like climate plays, this is the one to take them to.
