Where We Choose to Stand

Overview

Penny Chivas’s dance-theatre piece is built out of first-hand accounts from people across the UK who have taken part in climate direct action — testimony embedded in a soundscape by Nicolette Macleod, and set moving by a solo performer. It is a verbatim show that happens to be danced. Through audience interaction it turns the question outward: not what do you think about this, but where would you actually stand.

What we love about it:

Climate activists are usually written about as a position rather than as people — either heroic or a nuisance, rarely specific. Putting their own words in the room, in their own phrasing, undoes that. And the choice to carry testimony through a body rather than a monologue matters: the show is about what it costs to act, and the cost registers physically before you have decided whether you agree.

Who is it for?

Adults. Expect to be asked to participate rather than to sit still. The venue has wheelchair access and an audio enhancement system. A short run — it closes well before the Fringe does.
